Here is another great attachment for your spotting scope for those who prefer using their DSLR/DSL camera instead of a Point and Shoot. The above image is of the older system Leica APO Televid 77 Angled Scope system that I have. The scope is converted to an 800mm telephoto lens with the DSLR adapter attached. The current models sizes are 65mm or 82mm angled scopes for DSLR/DSL or previous post on Digiscope system. I would rather lower the center post on my tripod to get the right height and see through my camera, than to raise my center post to almost the end ( Not reccommend or advisable and not stable) for the straight scope. Plus the angled as I mentioned in a previous post on Spotting Scope Optics. The angled scope is great for the tropics. Both scopes will work well, but again I say to ask yourself “What and how will you be using the scope with what attachments and what feels the most comfortable for you.

Thanks for this adapter information. I am relatively new to bird watching and just upgraded my binoculars to a Nikon Monarch. I’ve had my eye on a new Canon 5D or 6D body and a 400MM telephoto. I’ve got a spotting scope on my list, but its farther down.

Glad this article was helpful to you. Congrats on your new binocular upgrade. Nikon Monarch are truly a great step up and they will take you far. When you get to the stage of wanting to get a spotting scope feel free to contact me for any guidance I can help walk you through.As for your Camera and lens choices. This all depends on what you want to do with the lens you choose. I would suggest spending most of your $$$ on the lens first and get the best you can afford. There are several flavors in the line-up of 4OOMM’s. Prime lens or Zoom? Then choose your camera body. If you are at all picky & want a work horse and want room to grow into, then go for the EOS 5D Mark III.
